What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the main cannabinoids in cannabis. These organic compounds are unique because of the way they interact with the human body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Moreover, the Cannabis sativa species contains at least 113 different cannabinoids, all of which trigger a different biological reaction when smoked, vaporized, or otherwise ingested.
Some of the other major compounds found in Cannabis sativa (apart from CBD) include:
- Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, responsible for producing psychotropic effects)
- Cannabinol (CBN)
- Cannabigerol (CBG)
- Cannabichromene (CBC)
- Cannabicyclol (CBL)
WHERE DOES CANNABIDIOL (CBD) COME FROM?
While cannabidiol exists in all types of Cannabis sativa, hemp exhibits some of the highest levels. Not only is hemp a rich source of CBD, but it’s naturally low in THC, making it ideal for producing CBD-enhanced products.
Mature hemp plants undergo a sophisticated extraction process to isolate CBD (and dozens of other cannabinoids and terpenes) before being expertly infused with a variety of carrier oils.
It’s also possible to extract CBD from other varieties of cannabis. However, given the risk of THC’s unwanted side effects, hemp is a superior raw material for CBD products focused on well-being.
THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM
Cannabinoids exert their influence over the human body largely via the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is an extensive regulatory network of receptors (CB1 and CB2) located throughout the body. Its job is essentially to monitor and regulate homeostasis—a stable internal state.
When all the different biological systems in our body are balanced, they can operate more efficiently. That’s not to say it’s unhealthy for this state to fluctuate, but when the ECS is chronically unbalanced—this is when serious problems can start.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THC AND CBD?
The easiest way to think of CBD and THC is as cousins. They both stem from similar origins, but they represent a different path in cannabinoid synthesis. Although the difference in chemical structure is only subtle, the impact on the human body is significant.
THC binds primarily with CB1 receptors in the brain, producing:
- changes to appetite
- impaired memory
- reduced coordination
- euphoria (a high)
CBD does not display a high binding affinity for either type of CB receptor. Instead, the cannabinoid takes a more general approach, boosting the overall effectiveness of the endocannabinoid system by encouraging the production of beneficial enzymes and endocannabinoids—compounds produced internally with a similar structure to cannabinoids.
